Baylab What’s New in January 2023

Workshops were back in full swing in the Autumn term, seeing school groups flood back into the Baylab after the Covid disruption. We were especially pleased to welcome 80 children to our Christmas private and public sessions, with bath bomb, candle and lip balm making! The children had lots of fun and learnt a little about the chemistry and physics behind the products they were making.

British Science Week is coming up, so we are pleased to announce that we have not one, but two competitions your school can take part in!

KS 1-3: Design an imaginative lab coat in our annual lab coat competition to have the chance to win some cool prizes, including a set of lab coats for your school. Further details

Years 8-13: NEW to the Baylab this year is our Baylab Packaging Competition, challenging pupils’ scientific and creativity skills. Can be a science or DT project.  Further details

We were pleased last term to start running our Marvellous Mutations workshop, created and curated by Grace, our previous lab assistant and Year in Industry [YINI register | EDT (etrust.org.uk)] student. Exploring the concept and significance of mutations, this workshop uses a series of interactive activities and experiments to look at DNA structure and replication; mitosis and meiosis; and variation.

We are also looking forward to reintroducing two of our shorter workshops – Food Detectives and DNA Extraction – in the summer term. Please feel free to consult our workshops page to find out more.

Our giant inflatable heart (pictured) is also an exciting new addition to the Baylab. We were pleased to take it, along with our make-your-own blood sample activity, to Thorpe Park last October for the STEAM event. Over 2,000 children walked through the heart and learnt a little more about its role in the circulatory system.

Our Summer Term dates have now been released and we are taking bookings for the remainder of the 2022/23 academic year. Looking forward to seeing you in the Baylab soon.
