Baylab What’s New - September 2023

Welcome back to all schools as we enter another academic year! Where did the Summer go?

Emma returned from maternity leave, and we sadly said goodbye to Lisa and Emily who have done such an amazing job of running the lab over the past year.

The new term has seen the arrival of Zach our new Year In Industry Student and Baylab Assistant. Each year the Baylab host a new student sourced via the Engineering Development Trust (EDT). The EDT offer paid placements for students 17 years and above. These are excellent for students who maybe want a break from studying after college prior to university or are unsure what they want to do. Worth considering if you have older students at your school or at home where the traditional route may not be for them. To find out more, visit YINI Vacancies | EDT (etrust.org.uk)

Over the Summer the Baylab hosted 8 holiday sessions, working with Reading Family Services we welcomed the Reading community through our doors which saw them making Bath Bombs, Lip Balm, learning about our digestive system and DNA. We hope to offer more holiday sessions in the future so please keep an eye on the Reading Family Services and Baylab pages.

We also attended Reading Pride, the sun was shining, joy was in the air, and we spent the day making over 300 pots of slime and beeswax candles with our community. It was so nice to see so many young people overjoyed with their creations and getting hands on.

Bookings for the Spring term for our hands-on, interactive workshops are now open. If you weren’t on the waiting list, then please get in touch with baylabinfo@bayer.com as we may still be able to accommodate you.

Not only will we be running our usual offering, but this term will also see us celebrating our 10,000 student milestone in style and we would love to hear stories from past students, did the lab help inspire you to take up careers in STEM or develop a love Science? Please get in touch.

We will also be starting an exciting new project called the ENTHUSE partnership. This partnership will see us working with local schools on a long-term basis, helping to develop positive attitudes towards science and support teachers with bringing the subject to life. Moving towards Christmas we will be working on our theme for the Lab Coat competition, so please watch this space in January for your opportunity to register and be within a chance of winning a set of lab coats for your school or educational group.
