Antonio Payano appointed as Vice-Chair of European Medicines Group
Antonio Payano, CEO Bayer UK/Ireland and Country Division Head Pharmaceuticals UK/Ireland, has been appointed as Vice-Chair of the European Medicines Group (EMG). The Group represents 20+ biopharmaceutical companies, headquartered in continental Europe, with a combination of research and development; manufacturing and commercial operations in the UK.
As Vice Chair, Antonio will work alongside the Chair, Uday Bose (UK General Manager at Boehringer Ingelheim) and fellow Vice-Chair, Jessamy Baird (UK General Manager at Sanofi) in leading the work of the EMG to engage with senior national stakeholders across government, the NHS and the wider life sciences space to help the sector to grow.
The EMG works closely with the industry’s main trade body, the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), to make the case for a more supportive operating environment for companies in the UK so that the sector can continue to deliver more new therapies to NHS patients earlier and more routinely.
On his appointment, Antonio said: “The EMG has played an important role over the last 20 years in highlighting the value that the pharmaceutical companies bring to the health and wealth of the UK. I’m looking forward to working alongside EMG colleagues to continue to ensure we make our voice heard on the issues that matter most.”
As a sector, the pharmaceutical industry needs to have a deliberate focus on where we can apply our collective influence to have the greatest effect. We need to get this right so that UK patients and the NHS can benefit fully from the latest medical technologies and create the right long-term conditions that enable companies to continue providing and investing in the innovation which then enables the UK life sciences sector to lead the way internationally.”
